Project Start: January 2026

The workforce is experiencing a change with retirements and new hires increasing. There is a lack of a structured, topic-based curriculum for training and knowledge transfer in the national environmental cleanup workforce.

What are the barriers to overcome?

Numerous training resources exist for professionals working at and managing sites with petroleum contamination; however, they are often fragmented and not tailored to onboarding professionals new to this field. Additional barriers include:

  • Knowledge transfer challenges (less mentors)
  • Gaps in training materials

How will we overcome the barriers?

The ITRC Workgroup will create a petroleum training curriculum to better support the evolving environmental workforce in this field. This will include prioritizing concepts and topics that new staff need to learn and create a structured curriculum for new staff on petroleum contamination and cleanup.

Note: The project team proposal outlines the initial scope and intended deliverables. As the team begins its work and collaboration, the final project scope, deliverables, and content may be adjusted to best meet the needs of ITRC members and the environmental community.
