Project Start: January 2026
Nature-based solutions are gaining momentum as sustainable, cost-effective approaches to environmental challenges. Phytotechnologies are receiving renewed attention for their ability to remediate contaminated sites while delivering ecological and social benefits. Recent innovations such as endophyte-assisted degradation and enhanced rhizosphere activity now enable treatment of deeper groundwater, higher contaminant concentrations, and faster cleanup timelines.
What are the barriers to overcome?
Outdated perceptions and guidance documents often prevent phytotechnologies from being considered in remediation decisions. Barriers include:
- Cleanup timeframe
- Effectiveness for deep groundwater remediation
- Range of treatable contaminants
- Regulatory cleanup standards
- Higher contaminant concentrations
How will we overcome the barriers?
The team will update the existing Phytotechnology Guidance by integrating new science and tools and providing nature-based cleanup strategies for today’s environmental challenges.
Note: The project team proposal outlines the initial scope and intended deliverables. As the team begins its work and collaboration, the final project scope, deliverables, and content may be adjusted to best meet the needs of ITRC members and the environmental community.
