In September 2024, ITRC published a Passive Sampling Technology Update guidance that combines the four previous ITRC Passive Sampling documents and includes updates to the technologies into one comprehensive document that evaluates 24 passive sampling technologies. The document explores the use of these technologies and application of the data gathered to all phases of environmental remediation.
The document is intended to be used by regulators and stakeholders currently sampling environmental media at sites undergoing evaluation, remediation, or monitoring for compliance with applicable laws and regulations. Additionally, the new guidance includes case studies to aid in your selection of passive sampling technologies and a series of how-to videos about several of the technologies. Note that additional videos will be added to the series throughout the fall.
Background
In 2001, ITRC developed four Guidance Documents on Diffusion and Passive Samplers, noting that “if we provide the information, then acceptance will come, facilitating the nationwide use of these devices under appropriate conditions, because it is a cost-effective means of collecting a formation quality groundwater sample, that can improve states’ ability to protect human health and the environment.” A little over 20 years later, many policies remain biased towards purge sampling and require side-by-side justification for the use of passive sampling, which can often take years. ITRC’s Passive Sampling Team will build on the previous Guidance documents to reflect recent advancements and provide a road map to use passive sampling efficiently and confidently for groundwater sampling.
