Stormwater runoff can carry pollutants from roads, buildings, and developed land into nearby rivers, lakes, and streams. To help protect water quality, stormwater is managed using best management practices (BMPs), which are structures or practices designed to capture, treat, or reduce polluted runoff before it reaches surface waters. Because stormwater regulations and best management practices requirements vary across states and local governments, it can be difficult to determine which best management practices will perform best at a particular site.
To help address this challenge, the Stormwater Best Management Practices Performance Evaluation (Stormwater-1, 2018) guidance provides recommendations for selecting, installing, inspecting, maintaining, and evaluating post-construction best management practices. The guidance covers the full best management practice lifecycle, including design considerations, costs, construction, maintenance, and performance evaluation. It also includes an online screening tool that helps users identify appropriate best management practices based on site conditions and pollutant treatment goals.
