ITRC celebrates our 30th anniversary in 2025 and as part of the occasion we present a new Strategic Direction.
Our Mission remains the same:
Develop innovative products to provide the knowledge and skills to address environmental challenges
But we recognize the emergence of new and emerging priorities and challenges facing our members and the stakeholders we serve. Our Strategic Direction presents a broad roadmap for our future with a commitment to achieving our long-standing mission, while encouraging adaptability and collaboration to meet the needs of our members and customers. It is divided into two key sections:
Our Foundation: ITRC’s Purpose, Vision, and Values
Our Guide: ITRC’s Strategic Priorities that will shape the activities we will undertake
ITRC’s Strategic Direction will direct our day-to-day activities and long-term initiatives, and we invite you to join us in making ITRC’s vision a reality.

Our Guide
ITRC’s Strategic Priorities will guide the organization’s long-term and day-to-day work. They highlight what we do, how we do it, and who we do it for. These priorities reflect ITRC’s foundation and long-standing mission and ensure the organization is ready to tackle new and emerging opportunities.
Addressing Environmental Challenges
ITRC is focused on its original charge as stated in the ERIS Bylaws: developing tools and strategies to reduce barriers to the deployment of innovative environmental technologies. This is accomplished through ITRC’s products, tools, and resources, which are developed by our Project Teams and members who bring their diverse experience, knowledge, and solutions to a common forum.
ITRC remains committed to addressing challenges related to environmental cleanup and remediation. However, we recognize the environmental priorities facing our members are evolving. Therefore, we will continue to explore opportunities to address environmental topics beyond cleanup and remediation.
Educating the Environmental Workforce
An environmental workforce that is well-trained is necessary to achieve our Vision. ITRC will remain a leader in providing training opportunities for our members and our customers to address the needs of the environmental community.
Our strong partnerships and new collaborations will allow us to increase our impact on the environmental community. ITRC will continue our longstanding relationship with EPA CLU-IN to deliver web-based training and explore other platforms and venues to share our expertise and products. We will also leverage our partnerships to expand our outreach and provide educational opportunities to a broader network including students and other environmental associations.
Empowering the Next Generation of Environmental Leaders
The environmental profession is changing, and we recognize the unique opportunities ITRC provides emerging leaders. ITRC has welcomed thousands of environmental professionals over the past 30 years who have contributed to our success; many of whom have gone on to become leaders here and within their organizations. By leveraging our extensive membership network and increasing growth opportunities for mission-driven individuals who share our vision and values, we will continue our tradition of developing the next generation of environmental leaders.
Improving Usability and Accessibility of ITRC Solutions
Since 2020, there has been a rapid advancement in technologies that provide great efficiencies for information exchange and knowledge transfer. These advancements have also impacted the ways in which people seek and retain information. To ensure we remain relevant, ITRC will utilize new technologies to improve the development of our resources, diversify our deliverables and training methods and provide new platforms for collaboration. We will also enhance our marketing and communication strategies to increase awareness of ITRC’s activities, encourage participation, and ensure everyone has access to our products and solutions.
Enhancing Partnerships
ITRC cannot be successful without our core partnerships: the U.S. state environmental agencies through ECOS, ERIS, and our State Engagement Program; the U.S. federal government including the Department of Defense, Department of Energy, and Environmental Protection Agency; and the private sector through our Industry Affiliates Program (IAP). The organization will continue to work closely with leaders from these long-time supporters to ensure that ITRC has the resources – financial and people – to meet the needs of membership.
ITRC must also build relationships and leverage our resources with other like-minded organizations and government agencies to address environmental challenges. Utilizing our collective strengths will allow ITRC to further expand and diversify our membership and provide benefits to additional stakeholders to make a greater impact on the environmental community.
