Solid mining waste represents a significant quantity of waste material in the United States and around the world. These materials have a range of physical and chemical properties that make them both potentially valuable and potentially hazardous to human health and the environment.
The Reuse of Solid Mining Waste (MW-1, 2025) guidance document and training is intended for state regulators and environmental consultants, mining and manufacturing stakeholders, community and tribal stakeholders, and others interested in the potential reuse of solid mining waste. It provides an introduction to mining wastes and discusses key considerations for reuse, including waste characterization, economic and market factors, life cycle and risk assessment, regulatory considerations, and stakeholder engagement. The guidance also outlines potential applications for reuse in construction, environmental, and industrial settings, and reviews technologies used in mineral beneficiation and processing. In addition, it includes case studies that cover a range of current mining waste reuse scenarios.
