Many DOE and NRC sites and some Superfund and DOD sites have radioactive contamination. Characterizing and cleaning up these sites are expensive and time-consuming. Since its inception in 1999, the ITRC Radionuclides Team has focused on facilitating decision making and cleanup of these radioactively contaminated sites, producing four guidance documents and three companion Internet-based trainings to increase awareness and acceptance of technical successes and regulatory processes associated with radioactive contamination.
The team completed a new technical and regulatory guidance document—Decontamination and Decommissioning of Radiologically Contaminated Facilities—published in January 2008. This guidance provides overviews of technologies and pertinent regulations associated with decommissioning radioactively contaminated sites.
